Re-settlement Services

Our organization is a hospitable resettlement agency committed to addressing the needs of the most vulnerable people globally. We have a consistent track record of repeatedly responding to that call.

Many refugees cannot return to their homes due to ongoing violence, warfare, and persecution. Additionally, many individuals live in precarious circumstances or have unique requirements that the host nation they have sought refugee cannot adequately meet. Under such conditions, UNHCR assists in the relocation of refugees to a different nation.

Resettlement is the process of relocating refugees from one country that provides asylum to another country that accepts them and eventually provides them with permanent residency.

The Statute and the Resolutions of the UN General Assembly legally obligate the UNHCR to engage in resettlement as one of the three sustainable alternatives. The concept of resettlement stands out due to its distinctiveness as the sole enduring resolution that entails the transfer of refugees from a host nation to a different country.

Facilitating a successful welcome and integration process yields advantages for both the relocated refugee and the host nation. Governments and non-governmental organizations collaborate to offer various services aimed at facilitating integration. These services encompass cultural orientation, language, and vocational training, and initiatives designed to enhance access to education and employment opportunities.

There are three methods by which we relocated refugees to Canada.

  • Government-Assisted refugees (GARs)
    • – These are Convention refugees whose initial settlement (for up to one year) is entirely supported by the Government of Canada or by the province of Quebec.
    • – They are referred to Canada for resettlement by a referral organization like the UNHCR.
  • Privately Sponsored refugees (PSRs)
    • – These are refugees who meet either the Convention refugee or the Country of Asylum definitions.
    • – They are referred for resettlement by a private sponsor in Canada who agrees to provide financial and other support for the refugee for one year.
  • Blended Visa Office-Referred refugees (BVORs)
    • – These are Convention refugees referred by the UNHCR who are matched with a private sponsor in Canada.
  • – The Government of Canada provides up to six months of income support through the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP), while private sponsors provide another six months of financial support and up to a year of social and emotional support.
